This update covers registration of an aircraft on the M Registry.

Before you begin your journey with us, please check the ‘ground rules’ below to see if your aircraft meets the basic requirements for registration in the Isle of Man.

The Registration and Nationality Markings Order came into effect from 1st August 2022.  For details on how this will affect the registration of your aircraft, please see our New Aircraft Registration and Marking Legislation page.

Ground Rules

  • Aircraft may only be operated for private, corporate or aerial work purposes whilst on the Register – commercial air transport operations are not permitted. Details of permitted remuneration and valuable consideration can be found here. Further information on aerial work can be found here;
  • Owners of Isle of Man registered aircraft must meet the ‘Qualified Ownership’;
  • Aeroplanes with MTOM of 5,700 kg or above and twin turbine-engine helicopters may be registered;
  • ‘Transitional Aircraft’ (aircraft awaiting commercial leases or sale) maybe registered – further information can be found here.
  • Aeroplanes with MTOM less than 5700kg but greater than 2730kg may be considered for registration on a case by case basis and at our discretion;
  • Aircraft of any weight owned by Isle of Man residents may be registered (Please note aircraft must be Type Certified and in the event that the owner subsequently ceases to be an Isle of Man resident it is expected that the aircraft would be re-registered elsewhere);
  • All documentation, written communications and data (electronic or otherwise) submitted to the IOMAR in support of an application for the registration of an aircraft or the issuance of a certificate, or any other document required by the Isle of Man Aircraft Registry to be provided, shall be in English. Where an original document is in a language other than English, the applicant/operator is responsible for ensuring that any translation provided to the Isle of Man Aircraft Registry is true and accurate.

Out of Sequence Registration

Our registration consists of the letter ‘M’, a hyphen and four letters (M-****).

You can have the next four letters from the Register or, for a small extra fee (£150), you can select a ‘cherished’ registration and this will be reserved for you for a period of 1 year.

Type Certificate Acceptance

The Isle of Man Aircraft Registry directly accepts the Type Certificates issued by:

  1. EASA (Europe)
  2. FAA (USA)
  3. TCCA (Canada)
  4. ANAC (Brazil) subject to the aircraft type design holding an issued TC from either EASA/FAA/TCCA
  5. UK

The IOMAR list of accepted Type Certificates to date, can be found on our online portal (for a complete list follow the hyperlink and then just click ‘Search’).

If your aircraft does not appear on the list, please contact the Registry Services Team for assistance.

Registration Process

Please contact the Registry as early as possible if you are considering registering an aircraft. This will enable our team to guide you through the process and make the experience as efficient as possible.  Registry Publication 1 provides a detailed checklist and includes links to application forms. We accept all submissions in electronic format.

Aircraft should not be de-registered from their previous state of registry until we have confirmed that the aircraft can be accepted for registration.  A member of the Registry Services Team will then be allocated to be your main point of contact throughout the entire registration process.

An Export Certificate of Airworthiness is not required in order to register an aircraft, subject to the aircraft holding a current Certificate of Airworthiness at the date of application for registration.  In the absence of either certificate, please contact the Registry to discuss an acceptable alternative means of compliance.

Any survey required for the issue of an Export Certificate of Airworthiness, while the aircraft is on its current register, must have been completed before the Isle of Man Aircraft Registry surveyor commences the initial Certificate of Airworthiness survey.
