The BBGA Michael Wheatley award was created shortly after his death in 2006.  Michael Wheatley had been an enthusiastic and energetic contributor to the furtherance of UK business aviation and served on the BBGA board of directors.  He also held a leading role in the support advisory services to the UK Police and ambulance authorities and leading financial institutions.  His services to the BBGA and UK business aviation are remembered through the award created in his name to be presented each year to an individual who is judged by the BBGA Board to have contributed exemplary service to Business Aviation.

Nigel Warren, Martyn Love, & Wally Epton

In moving from one deserving recipient  to another, the trophy and its carrying case had suffered with FW&T over the years.  When it was presented to Captain Wally Epton in 2024 he undertook to apply some restoration to the trophy and its travelling case.

Up stepped Martyn Love an enthusiastic aviator friend of Wally’s, who was being coached by Wally at Farnborough to fly the DHC 1 Mk22 Chipmunk, on seeing the trophy generously offered to have it refurbished and have a replacement travelling case manufactured in his company workshops.  Martyn owns Camberley Signs Ltd that specialises in department store outfitting and display stands.  One of his employees, Russell Hardy enthusiastically set about manufacturing a new case. He also repaired and polished the trophy which was showing signs of age. The result can be seen in the accompanying photo.

The Michael Wheatley Award trophy can now be presented in fine form by the BBGA as it travels safely and securely from one worthy recipient to another each year.

Incidentally, Martyn Love refused to accept any payment for this work. Recognising the practical involvement that he had in owning and flying aircraft, Wally Epton and Nigel Warren at Flight Safety International Training Centre Farnborough, hatched a plot to suitably reward Martyn and Russell for their contribution to the BBGA with a “flight” in the Honda Jet simulator.  The BBGA is grateful to FSI Farnborough for their generous support in this manner.

The photo  taken at FSI Farnborough shows Martyn Love with Nigel Warren, Regional Sales Manager FSI Farnborough, and Wally Epton former BBGA Board Member and 2024 recipient of the Trophy, in front of the Honda Jet simulator which both Martyn and Russell Hardy will be flying very soon.
