There are multiple online reports of aircraft being targeted with fake GNSS signals which are quickly leading to the complete loss of the aircraft’s navigational capability, including multiple reports of infection of the aircraft’s Inertial Reference System (IRS).

Cases have been reported in various locations in the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, Jordan and Iraq. These events are not traditional GNSS jamming and are very different to those routinely experienced in the past. The events are often been severe including the total loss of navigational capability and reliance on ATC vectoring.

Events published in aviation online media include:

  • Aircraft positioning information showing the aircraft as being stationary for extended periods of time (30 minutes) whilst actually 100—200 miles away;
  • A Bombardier Challenger 350 on an RNAV approach into Amman, Jordan, reporting all systems including IRS confused about location;
  • A G650 in Iraq suffered navigational error of 60 miles in proximity to Iranian airspace;
  • An Embraer 190 with twin IRS lost position and FMS disagree messages.
